The Preacher's Task

Reading through the 100 page introduction to Don Carson's lengthy commentary on The Gospel According to John, he helpfully includes a brief section for preachers. Almost as an aside, includes this gem on the preacher's task as he thinks through his preaching:

I assume that the reader has already devoted a fair bit of thought to the relations between ancient text and contemporary context, between expository lecture and expository preaching (where men and women are made to feel the text's bite and balm), between rigorous exegetical accuracy and colourful presentation.

Even in this, there is a lot to consider and get right before we even come to the passage! Room for improvement, and a spur on to get there...
