Books

For a while, I hadn't finished any books... It seems that sometimes I go through a phase when it is hard to read, and to keep reading, and I got bogged down in a book on the early church. But now, this past two days I have finished two books! The first was John Grisham's 'The Broker' - his latest book, and just as good as the rest of his books, fast-paced, and a great read. It follows the story of a power broker on the Washington circuit of Congress who gets a last minute pardon and goes into CIA-enforced exile in Italy. A very good read. The second book was 'Alien Nation' by Melvin Tinker, which looks at how the church is in 'Babylon', with increased secularisation in our society, and how we should seek to engage and be a witness in society, but not be brought down by or to the world's standards. I have now started the 6th book in the Left Behind series, called Assassins. We'll see how it goes!

  1. Hi again Gary

I enjoyed reading your comments on the books that you have dipped into - and finished - recently. I am a John Grisham fan too ... he is a great writer. That said I still have some of his books to read. Have you read "The Testament?" It is my favourite.

I have also read some of the Left Behind series. I am at "The Mark" which is the seventh or eighth book. I have to say that, whilst I enjoyed the early ones, I found the later offerings less exciting.

Have you read "The Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel? If you haven't, you should get it. A great read. Full of fascinating information, but written in a very relaxed, conversational style.

A friend has recommended a book by Tim Wells and Fred Zaspel on "New Covenant Theology." It is supposed to be very readable and quite challenging!

I'll finish on that note. Happy reading ...

  3. George, thanks for your comments - good to have your feedback and your siggestions for books. Having read all of Grisham's I have indeed read 'The Testament', and even recommended it to someone the other day (although she had already read it!).

I'm a little concerned by the dodgy theology, in my opinion, in the Left Behind Series, and they are even just a wee bit boring, given that they contine to repeat what has gone before in an endless manner... surely, having read through the previous 5 books, you don't need to be reminded over and over of what had happened... the books would also be a bit shorter!

I haven't read 'Case for a Creator' but I do have 'Case for Christ' which I might get into soon, although my list of books to be read are ever-increasing!
